One of the most popular items a young child could own during the 70s and 80s was a walkie talkie. Children used walkie talkies for playing military games or for covertly communicating with friends in the vicinity after they were supposed to be asleep in bed. The kids of that generation have long since graduated to mobile phones and the new generation of kids have all kinds of technological games and gadgets to keep them occupied, but that does not mean that walk talkies have become redundant.

Now, walkie talkies are also known as two-way radios, and they have undergone many other notable changes as well. Companies like Audiovox and Motorola have transformed the walk talkies of the past, and now they come with extra features like thermometers, barometers, altimeters and integrated digital compasses.

Although there are tons of excellent new features in walkie talkies right now, some of the best improvements are those that have been made to the original features of the device. Modern walkie talkies can send signals over distances of several kilometers – a far greater distance than was earlier imagined. The batteries will last for quite some time, and even when they expire, you can charge them up again rather than having to purchase new ones like you did in the past.

One of the best features on some of the new models of walkie talkies is an in-built global positioning system (GPS) that can help you stay on course or navigate your way back to a starting point. You can even get weather data sent right to your walkie talkie if you so desire, so you will never again have to be shocked and dismayed by inclement weather if you are out fishing or hiking.

For years, outdoorsmen have made good use of walkie talkies, but these devices can be of great benefit in a number of other circumstances. You do not have to spend a lot of time outside in order to find a walkie talkie to be useful; for instance, you might want to have one on hand in the case of a natural disaster. Most people now rely solely on their cell phones for making contact with others, but your cell phone is not as reliable as you may think, so having a Plan B is a good idea.

Walkie talkies are an excellent deal, and you can find some for the low price of only $100. Keep in mind that this is a one time fee since you will not be charged each time that you use them, as you are with a cell phone. Moreover, they are a great long-term investment because even if you only use them once in a while, they will last for many years to come.
