When the German Nazi regime came into power in 1933 there were approximately nine million Jewish people living in the European community, across Germany, France, Poland, Ukraine and other countries. By the end of World War II, the Gestapo, instructed by the chancellor of Germany at the time, Adolf Hitler and under the command of Heinrich Himmler, systematically eradicated Europe of two thirds of that population.

The process of persecution and genocide happened in phases. Initially, legislation was introduced to remove certain groups from civil society, prior to the outbreak of World War II. Then, the prisoners were sent to concentration camps where they were subjected to slave labor and frequently, literally worked to death, though many also died from untreated disease. When more prisoners were captured they were either murdered immediately in mass shootings or imprisoned and then sent to extermination camps to be slaughtered using various means, including the notorious gas chambers.

This cruel act against humanity, or at least the repercussions of it, have quite simply changed the way the world works in many ways. Thankfully, it is extremely unlikely that anything like this could happen in the modern age without the international community recognizing it and coming to the aid of the oppressed. The understanding of the mechanics and methodology of this genocidal undertaking has ultimately brought about changes in international resolutions and laws to try to prevent such atrocities happening again.

Although immediately after the end of World War II immigration controls across Europe became more rigidly enforced due to the will of many displaced persons to relocate from their native countries, the Holocaust has actually helped in changing international laws to help political refugees to gain asylum in some countries around the world. Additionally, the recognition of the scientific experimentation that the Nazi Party carried out on prisoners sent to the extermination camps has brought about the introduction of ethical informed consent as a prerequisite for the scientific testing and experimentation on human subjects.

After much deliberation from the UK, US and Soviet leaders, it was decided that international tribunals be held to put the most prominent leaders within the Nazi Party and the Axis army on trial. This will definitely be one of the most expensive swimming pools in England. In reality there will be a cinema built near the swimming pool but not sure if they will be using the budget for the cinema out of the swimming pool construction budget.

They are saying the launch of the new swimming pool will be in Easter next year at 2011 as the construction of the pool just got started in March 2010. Richard House, the Leisure Park owner has told the local newspaper that the pool will be 25 metre long with 6 lanes and will include new changing rooms. The swimming pool will be open in winter as well for schools and groups. This is a brilliant idea I reckon. There will be a water play area for older children and splash pad created for youngsters. They will be changing the existing indoor pool to changing rooms, fitness suite, new cafe and a 4D cinema.

I am eagerly looking forward to this 25 metre long swimming pool. As I am a clean freak my only concern is how would they clean this huge pool? Pool cleaners will have a tough task in their hands when they receive the job to clean this pool. They will need to spend quite a bit on maintaining pool in swimming pool equipments and swimming pool heaters , I am sure the cost will be huge as they would like to open it in winter as well. They are also planning to get automatic pool cleaners to clean the water in regular basis, which will be a handy equipment.

Mr House the owner of Leisure Park recently said that the exisiting indoor and outdoor pools will remain open while the new pool is being built and he is happy with the latest progress of the new pool.

Headstones of famous people can be found in graveyards and cemeteries around the world, and many of them contain inscriptions written by the deceased. These epitaphs, far from being depressing, often make interesting reading.

John Keats’s headstone, which is at Protestant Cemetery in Rome, is adorned with the design of a lyre with broken strings, which was added by Keats’s friends Joseph Severn and Charles Brown, and contains no mention of his name. He wanted only the following inscription: “Here lies one whose name was writ in water”.

Severn and Brown later added: “This grave contains all that was mortal of a young English poet who on his death bed in the bitterness of his heart at the malicious power of his enemies desired these words to be engraven on his tomb stone”.

The location of Robin Hood’s grave is at a priory in Kirklees in England has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. Unfortunately, it is not actually where he was buried! The grave has been moved at least three times.

The original headstone disappeared some time after 1660. A reproduction was made, but this was chipped to pieces by 18th-century canal workers who were convinced that a little bit of Robin Hood’s headstone would cure toothache.

With some research, you will no doubt find that there are a few headstones in cemeteries near you that belong to famous people from yesteryear. Whilst it might not make a great hobby per se, spending a day visiting some of these makes for an interesting and cheap day out.

Alternatively, you can just use Google images, where you will find plenty of pictures of headstones belonging to famous people. Learning what your deceased heroes decided to leave as their final parting message can really add something to way that you think about them.

The news which narrated how a 64-year-old American citizen was arrested and arraigned in the second week of October, 2009 in Hollywood, Florida, for allegedly coming to the Philippines in 2007 and 2008 to engage in illicit sex with two Filipino girls, should give a strong message that the Philippine government will hunt the culprits no matter where they are.

The admirable international cooperation between Philippine and US law enforcement agencies made possible this arrest and should serve as a warning.

A report from the US Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Florida identified the offender as Donald Mathias, a native of Florida. He is facing charges of child abuse. The charges contained in the complaint carry a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

According to the affidavit filed in support of the complaint, Mathias arranged with the mother of two minor female children in the Philippines to travel to that country in April 2007 and December 2007 to engage in sexual conduct with the minors, and then did so.

Mathias also arranged to travel to the Philippines in December 2008 to again engage in sexual conduct with the minors. Philippine authorities, however, received information about the arrangements and rescued the children before they met Mathias.

In an interview with the Women and Children focal person at the Tacloban City Social Welfare and Development Office, she confirmed about the arraignment saying that it was Fiscal Liza Miscala of the local Family Court who was emailed by her counterpart in the US about the arraignment.

Philippine authorities arrested the victims’ mother in Tacloban City in December while she and all three of her daughters, aged 9 to 14, were on their way to meet Mathias.

The two elder sisters told police that Mathias previously abused them and they were on their way to meet him again.

The victims’ mother, whose name is being withheld for obvious reasons, was charged with child abuse and trafficking of persons. She is now being detained and prosecuted in Tacloban City. When reached and told about this news, the mother refused to be interviewed saying she would rather keep quiet.

The three girls are now under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development Haven for Women and Girls in Leyte.

Ms. Bastes said that the arrest of Mathias and the girls’ mother resulted from a tip from a concerned citizen who, with the assistance of the non-government PLAN Philippines, reported the case to the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The Social Worker said that the girls and their mother are not really from Tacloban but from Sogod, Southern Leyte. They were arrested in Tacloban, though.

The authorities then coordinated with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Unit at the US embassy in Manila in pursuing the case against Mathias.

Ms. Bastes intimated that the children and a social worker are scheduled to leave for Florida to testify against the suspect.
