Child Safety Online

You can help to make the internet a safe place for your child. Taking action today is better than waiting until tomorrow. The longer you wait, the better chance your child has of connecting with those online predators.

The decision to devote the time to learning crocheting is one thing, but reading crochet patterns can be a challenge, especially when you are first starting out. Staying with the most basic stitches when starting out is the best way to avoid frustration. Making a washcloth, dishcloth, or scarf would be the first item you want to attempt, using the basic stitches in crochet.

An easy cloth pattern would be as follows: Chain 25 stitches (or more if you want the cloth wider), single crochet in the 2nd stitch from the hook, make a single crochet stitch in each chain across. At the end of the row, chain 1, turn your work and then you single crochet in each stitch across the row. At the end of the row chain 1, turn your work again and then single crochet in each stitch back across and continue until you have the cloth you want. This is super easy and a perfect beginner project.

If you prefer a scarf, this would be a good beginner project: Chain 20 (do more if you want it wider). Single crochet in 2nd chain from the hook, and single crochet in each chain until you are at the end of the row, chain 2, turn your work, now do double crochet stitches in each stitch across, once at the end, you chain 2, turn your work and then double crochet again across the row, continue this way until the scarf is as long as you would like it. Instead of making all stitches double crochet, you might want to alternate rows between the double and the single.

When you are comfortable with the basic single and double crochet stitches, the next best project to tackle is probably a granny square. The granny square is one of the more easy patterns to master. You can move on to learning how to change colors in your granny squares once you are familiar with the basics of making them. It’s pretty simple to do. Be patient and realize that learning how to read patterns is like anything else, and can take some time and effort. You have to have patience, and you may find it helpful to talk out the instruction, and read it a couple of times.

Try not to make the same mistake I made when I first started to learn how to read crochet patterns. Don’t doubt the pattern by over-thinking it. If I encountered something in a pattern that did not seem right, I would often end up wasting a lot of time trying to figure out something when there was nothing wrong with the pattern at all. I’d get very frustrated during those periods and would tend to give up trying to learn for a while.

Once I decided I was not going to give up, I’d come across a part of a pattern that I didn’t think makes sense and thought if I do it “that” way, it’ll be wrong. Eventually, I just made up my mind to follow the pattern exactly as written and take my chances. I bet I know what you are thinking! Although I was not expecting it, my projects turned out very well.

Remember that you are in this for enjoyment and to get a sense of accomplishment when you finish a project. Crochet is a very relaxing stress reliever so enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!
