There are many simple tips to save money when dealing with personal finance basics. There are a few that are a little more time consuming than others but in the end it’s completely worth what time it might take. Even if you carry out 1 or 2 of these tips you can save more money than you might imagine each month.

REQUEST FREE SAMPLES:

There are plenty of Internet sites that offer free samples for every day items. Sometimes the big companies such as K-Mart or Home Depot have great opportunities for you and I to get free items. Those products often include skin moisturizers and shampoos to pet food or bathroom products. One other option is to go directly to a manufacturer’s website to locate some free samples on brand new items. If there is something you may need, type ‘free sample’ into google before you go to the store to purchase that product. This is the beginning of learning personal finance basics.

CHANGE CREDIT CARD SPENDING AND HABITS:

Credit cards can be great but can be dangerous. With those high interest rates and monthly fees, credit cards might end up costing you more down the road than you may have planned.

Things I keep in mind:
– always use cash unless its for a huge purchase
– be certain you are able to pay for product before you use a credit card
– be sure you can pay the amount owe on your credit card

AVOID IMPULSE BUYS:

Everyone has had to push a shopping cart through the grocery store and when we arrive at the cashier we have twice as much as we planned to get. Always, always, always create a shopping list, go by that list and don’t purchase anything that isn’t on your list. This goes for any type of shopping like clothes, food or entertainment. Stores are mapped out specifically for those impulse buys with magazine racks and gum within an arms length. Make your list, check it twice, and follow it.

SHOP THE SALE RACK:

This is another personal finance basics rule but don’t confuse this with an impulse buy. If you made your list and know that you need a pair of pants and a shirt check the sale rack first. It’s pretty likely you might find exactly what you are looking for on sale and pay far less than the usual price. Food stores operate the same way. They usually over order products and are forced to run in-store specials on overstock items. Just be sure that item is on your list.

SAVE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY:

This may be the most difficult thing to do when cash is tight, but it is the most critical step to take. According to a book I’ve read ‘The Wealthy Barber’ you must save 10% of the money you make each month. That may not seem like much but it will add up very fast and if wisely invested it will assist your retirement plans in the future.
