Improvements in technology have meant that more and more of us are now able to have fast internet access in our homes, using any one of the dozens of broadband providers. But with so many to choose from, it can be difficult to know which is best. Cable broadband tends to be a lot quicker, but there isn’t as much choice or availability, whereas ADSL broadband is available wherever there is a phone line, although the speeds aren’t as impressive. So how do you choose? When choosing your broadband provider, there are some basic things you need to consider:

-How fast will your broadband be? ISPs will quote their maximum speed in megabits per second, however, your normal speed will probably be less, and varies depending on a number of factors.
-Are there any limits on the amount you are allowed to download? Most have a monthly limit, depending on your plan.
-Does the monthly cost cover line rental as well, or do you still need to pay BT for that?
-Is there any technical and customer support, and if so, how good is it?
-Does the ISP provide everything you need to get online, including the router and cables?
-Some ISPs make you commit to a minimum contract, so make sure you ask.

With so much to consider, it can be hard to make sure you’ve got all the information you need, let alone which ISP you should choose, which is why the price comparison sites are so useful. Whether you use the larger ones that look at a variety of services including broadband, or the specialist ones that just focus on comparing ISPs, they will make it easier to see which is best for you. Some also provide useful ratings on things like customer service and download speeds.

Getting your broadband up and running is usually quite straightforward, but as with most things technical, from time to time you may experience problems. Most ISPs should be able to help and put things right without too much fuss, and that’s why choosing one with good technical and customer support is important when you’re looking for a broadband provider. If you’ve been unlucky enough to choose one that isn’t very helpful, or has more than a reasonable number of issues, try contacting Ofcom, or change to a different ISP if you can.

Choosing a broadband provider can be quite challenging, even if you know what you’re talking about. If your a bit of a technophobe, it can be even more daunting. Make use of all the resources that are available to you. Look at the comparison and review websites to see which ISPs rank highly for the quality of their service as well as their download speeds. You might find it pays to spend a little more each month to have fewer problems, and someone to speak to when it does go wrong.
